3dfx super fan Oscar Barea recently shared some important VoodooX project updates, describing his pursuit of modernizing classic Voodoo graphics cards. The Voodoo fixer, modder and collector has been in isolation since April due to an extensive house remodel, but two new updates reveal Barea has a beautiful new shiny white “Christmas design” graphics card PCB. Today, he even started assembling his new VoodooX “baby.” Perhaps he was inspired to take action by the news. 3dfx 24th anniversary of death on Sunday.

Before we take a closer look at December’s two updates, it’s worth taking a step back and reminding readers of the purpose of the VoodooX project.
Barea started sharing the fruits of this electronic love on Twitter/X back in October 2022. Voodoo4 4500 and Voodoo5 5500.
One of the highlights of VoodooX’s design is its modern monitoring interface. Our goal is to ultimately have VoodooX that works perfectly with VGA, DVI and HDMI displays.
This 3dfx enthusiast was delighted when VoodooX first booted up Windows and ran the 3dfx Glide Donut demo in March of this year. “I can’t believe it,” Barea said excitedly. “marvelous!!!”
As major project milestones approach, Berea still faces some thorny issues—as is to be expected in such a complex one-man project. when We last covered VoodooXIn April, Barea was working on implementing a VRAM toggle switch (switching between 32MB and 64MB). That same month, he seemed happy with most aspects of VoodooX and shared numerous gameplay footage and project updates. This project will never work with best graphics card 2024, but that might be a dream for many retro gamers.
Fast forward to December, after seven months of radio silence due to a home remodel, and we see the 3dfx enthusiast with a gleaming new white PCB to move forward with his projects. In addition to the new colors, Barea noted that he “fixed some minor bugs and routed the memory signals differently.” He seemed re-energized and soon put in the time to start assembling the first white PCB of the VoodooX.
We recommend Voodoo fans keep an eye on Barea’s social media now, as the house renovation disruption may be over and he can quickly move forward with VoodooX again. In fact, Barea joked today that updated performance information would be shared “soon.”
