In the AI era, is language no longer necessary?
I’ve seen this statement a lot lately, but it seems like the people who say it probably only live online and don’t have any real-life need to use a second language.
There’s something about communicating in someone else’s language that carries a human warmth that artificial intelligence can never replace – unless brainwave communication is one day invented (and even if that happens, many ethical and safety concerns mean it’s unlikely to become a reality in the next century) .
More importantly, learning a language is also a process of learning its culture. Strict AI translation can never truly replace a human being who is truly proficient in a second language.
Overreliance on artificial intelligence may lead to greater differences between people in the future, which is something I think we should be cautious about. In other words, unless it is face-to-face communication, I will also rely on AI to assist translation and communication.
