“Total Recall” is adapted from the novella “We Can Wholesale You” by Philip K. Dick, telling the story of an ordinary construction worker who is tired of his life and seeks help from a company called Rekall. The purpose was to plant false memories in his brain to simulate a journey to Mars, but he ultimately discovered that his entire life had been an implanted lie and now he is wanted. Sounds heavy, but dog nitty-gritty, this movie is fun.

Thematically reminiscent of the classic silent film Metropolis, “Dark City” follows a fugitive wanted for murder who has no recollection of the crime. Is he guilty? Or is it possible that he is completely crazy? The underworld he encounters consists of a group of otherworldly beings known simply as “The Strangers,” which keeps him and the audience guessing for much of the film. The visual beauty and effects of the film are well worth the price of admission. This was way ahead of its time.

StarCraft VI: The Undiscovered Kingdom delves into the fascinating realm of politics as Captain Kirk is framed for the murder of a high-ranking Klingon official. Spock takes on a sort of Sherlock Holmes role – he even includes a quote from the famous literary detective in the film – working to solve the case and prove Kirk’s innocence. Christopher Plummer gets bonus points as the villain Chang.

“10 Cloverfield Lane” is a riveting psychological thriller with unexpected supernatural developments. Technically a sequel to Cloverfield – which means it’s definitely a science-fiction film – this one explores the terrifying nature of reality and the metaphorical monsters it can create. The cast is tight, but John Goodman’s Howard is a force to be reckoned with.
