AI Growth Zones (AIGZ)

Many of the 13,250 jobs the report says will be created in the near future will be in “AI growth zones”, the first of which will be in Culham, Oxfordshire, which is also the headquarters of the UK Atomic Energy Authority ( UKAEA).

This is important because all data centers hosting AI will consume huge amounts of energy, at least 100 MW to start, and then 500 MW. Unfortunately, although Culham is home to nuclear energy research, there is no power station on site, which explains why the report proposes the creation of a new AI Energy Board to fill the gap.

Cooling new data centers could also be an issue in the potential drought zone, despite Thames Water having pledged to build a new reservoir nearby.
