AirTag just got a new feature in iOS 18.2, here’s how to use it

Shared item locations make finding lost items easier

Apple’s Find My app now offers a feature called Share Project Locations that works with aviation label and other compatible items.

“Find My” already provides a “shared project” function, but this function is designed to continuously share AirTags with close family members or friends. Sharing Items adds items to your contact’s own Find My app so you can both track their location at any time.

However, shared item location differs in that it is designed to be temporary and only used if an item is lost.

How to use the new AirTag feature in iOS 18.2

To use the new features, make sure you’re running iOS 18.2 and follow these steps:

1. Open the Find My app on your iPhone, iPad or Mac
2. Go to project tab
3. Select AirTags or other lost items
4. Navigate down until you see “Shared Project Location”
5. Follow the pop-up screen to start sharing

Sharing an item’s location will create a shareable link containing a map and the instant location of your item.

Users can generate shared item location links in the Find My app on iPhone, iPad or Mac. Recipients of the link will be able to view a website that displays the project’s location on an interactive map. When new locations become available, the website will automatically update and display a timestamp of the most recent update.

Important Privacy Disclaimer

Users should be aware that while Apple’s system is built to protect your privacy, the company does note that whoever you share the link with will be able to see curated information about you.

According to the Find My app: “The item’s serial number and your Apple account email or phone number will be visible.”

This is an intentional feature because you want airlines or other third parties to be able to easily contact you during the search process. But it’s still worth noting.
