AMD Dazzles CES Crowd With 9950X3D Desktop CPU and Ryzen AI Max Mobile Processors
At CES 2025, AMD will be introducing a slew of new processors, the most exciting of which are its high-end processors. AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D Desktop Processoras well as AMD Ryzen AI MAX and MAX Pro for laptops.
16-core 9950X3D with 144 MB cache (!!) is a good complement to the 7950X3D desktop processor and provides an average of 8% additional performance (in 40 games) over the already super-fast 7950X3D, according to data provided by AMD. There is also a more affordable 12-core Ryzen 9 9900X3D that may have a slightly better performance-to-price ratio.
We expected independent indicators to confirm this position. From here, potential buyers can evaluate the performance-to-price ratio that is often the bottom line for desktop processors, since power efficiency is not as important to these users.
Ryzen AI series is targeting “AI laptops” based on Microsoft Copilot, which has performance requirements to get into the Copilot club. As a result, AMD introduced Ryzen AI 300 and Ryzen AI Max processorswith the latter being the most interesting as it targets creators and higher level use cases.
They use the latest CPU core design and come with varying numbers of CPUs and GPU kernels to achieve the desired price. You can have from 6 to 16 CPU cores and 16 up to 40 GPU coreswhich is a huge number for AMD products. AI capabilities are the same across all variants: 50 TOPS (trillion operations per second) is a high number, with competitors often clocking in at 13-30 TOPS.
At 45-120W TDP, we’re yet to see what chassis these processors will be used in, but this isn’t your ultra-mobile laptop, but rather a variety of (relatively) lightweight workstations and creative laptops.
AMD touted favorable internal benchmarks, claiming Blender rendering was 400% faster than an Intel Core Ultra 9 288V processor. Overall, the specs and performance claims are impressive, and it’s a great technical foundation for future AI-powered laptops and mobile workstations.
The Ryzen AI Max series also comes in AMD Ryzen AI Max PRO option related to AMD PRO Technologies for businesses that deal with various aspects of computer and data security or fleet management.
