Android 16 DP2 has some new emoji to try out

  • Google has just released Android 16 DP2, which includes support for 7 new emojis.
  • New emoji include a face with bags under the eyes, fingerprints, a harp, and more.
  • These 7 emojis are part of Unicode version 16.0.

Google just released its second developer preview Android 16and it provides a whole new set of developer features. On the user side, though, there doesn’t seem to be much visible new change in DP2, at least as far as we know. However, when we dug into the update we discovered at least one interesting new feature: support for the seven new emojis in Unicode 16.0.

Android 16 DP2 Includes updated emoji font files containing 7 new emojis that are part of Unicode 16.0. If you don’t know, Unicode is the universal text encoding standard that assigns a unique number to every character, symbol, and script used in written communications. It enables computers (even computers running different operating systems) to understand and display text in almost any language. Emoticons are like melting face and upside down smile They are also codified in the Unicode standard, allowing them to be shared between devices running different operating systems or browsers.

The Unicode Consortium frequently adds new emoticons to the Unicode standard, which are released along with other updates to the standard. For example, Unicode 16.0 adds support for the following 7 emoticons, as shown below Emoji Encyclopedia:

If you try to view this content Emoji Encyclopedia Page And your device does not support Unicode 16.0, you will only see empty boxes instead of emojis. However, if you do see emojis, your device does support the latest set of emojis. This is the case on the Pixel 9 Pro running Android 16 DP2, but not the case on the Pixel 7 Pro running Android 16 DP2 Android 15 QPR2 Beta 2.

Google typically supports new versions of the Unicode standard very quickly, so hopefully it won’t take the company long to add support for the standard. 2025 Emoji Lineupwhich will include up to 164 new emojis.
