TL;DR

  • Google is preparing several changes to the Android Auto interface to expand support for more vehicle types.
  • The company has added some new icons to the app, suggesting that motorcycle support is in the works.
  • Android Auto may also gain support for high-definition video output for larger head units.

Google may soon introduce several interface changes for Android Auto app to make it more inclusive for motorcyclists. The company also appears to be working on adding support for higher-resolution displays to make the interface look crisp even if your car has a 10-inch or larger head unit.

An APK parsing helps predict features that may appear in a service in the future based on unfinished code. However, it is possible that such predicted features may not make it to the public release.

We noticed upcoming UI changes for Android Auto version 13.5.150204 even before the official release. As you can see in the following screenshots, Google has replaced all the words “Car” in the app settings with “Vehicle”. While this change is minor, it does suggest that Google has no plans to limit Android Auto to cars.

The company has also added several new icons to the app, reaffirming its commitment to officially supporting motorcycles. The app has even received brand-specific icons, including those of Indian motorcycle manufacturer TVS.

In addition to these interface changes, we found evidence that Android Auto will soon be able to support higher resolution head units. The app is currently limited to 1920x1080p video output resolution.

However, Google appears to be working on adding support for 2560x1440p and 3840x2160p video output. As mentioned earlier, these changes are not in the current stable version of Android Auto and will likely come in a future update.

It’s worth noting that Google is also working on bringing Android Automotive OS to motorcycles. Austrian motorcycle manufacturer KTM has already introduced a new communication control unit based on the operating system that will be available on future premium motorcycles.
