Apple and Sony are working on Vision Pro support for PSVR2 controllers

Vision Pro could get support for Sony PSVR2 controllers soon, According to Mark Gorman per day Turn on the power Newsletter for Bloomberg. Apple and Sony apparently planned to announce their support for the controllers “weeks ago” but delayed the rollout. Under this partnership, Apple will begin selling Sony consoles, which are not currently available on their own.

Sony has apparently been working on adding support for months, while Apple has asked third-party developers if they would benefit from Sony’s VR controllers. This is likely great news for Vision Pro owners who wish the headset had more gaming chops. (There are very few good original VisionOS games – thresher, An enchanting game comes to mind where you toss a giant worm/dragon around a psychedelic space using only hand movements.)

Gorman writes that Apple also wants to use the controllers for more than just gaming, as the controllers will be able to navigate in VisionOS, and will provide more precise controls in apps like Final Cut Pro and Adobe Photoshop. Right now, you can pair a standard Bluetooth controller and navigate through VisionOS — tapping buttons to select things, scrolling with the analog sticks, and so on. It’s also suitable for gaming, but you’re mostly limited to iPad and iPhone games that support controller or Emulators designed for iOS Or that The original Virtual Boy One.

Will this partnership pay off and help games truly flourish on the platform? I’m not immediately hopeful, given the Vision Pro’s sales and Apple’s track record of support from game publishers.

However, the Vision Pro is fundamentally different from other Apple devices, and VR is its own spectacle. There are signs that the community wants it, with at least one Fully funded Kickstarter project To develop Meta Quest 3 style controllers, called Surreal Touch, for the Vision Pro. Maybe the Vision Pro will have some great VR games – whether anyone will be around to buy them is another question entirely.
