Apple Explains Why It Doesn’t Plan to Create a Search Engine

Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of services, explains why the iPhone maker isn’t planning to create a search engine like Google.

in a declaration Cue filed a document last week in U.S. federal court in Washington, D.C., saying Apple opposes the idea for the following reasons:

• Development of the search engine will cost Apple “billions of dollars” and “take many years,” diverting investment capital and employees away from “other growth areas” the company is focused on.
• The search business is “growing rapidly” due to artificial intelligence, so there will be “economic risks” for Apple to create a search engine.
• In order to create a “viable” search engine business, Apple would be required to “sell targeted advertising,” which is “not a core business” for the company and would violate its “longstanding privacy commitment.”
• Apple does not have enough “professionals” and “operational infrastructure” to build and operate a successful search engine business.

Earlier this year, as part of the U.S. Department of Justice’s antitrust trial against Google, the court announced a deal to make Google the default search engine in Apple’s web browser, Safari. is illegal. In his statement, Cue asked the court to allow Apple to have its own witnesses testify during the trial to defend the deal.

“Only Apple can say what future collaborations will best serve users,” Cue wrote. “Apple remains relentlessly committed to creating the best user experience possible and exploring potential partnerships with other companies. and arrangements to achieve this.”

As part of the deal, Cue revealed that Google will pay Apple approximately $20 billion in 2022 alone.

Cue said that if the agreement can no longer continue, “it will undermine Apple’s ability to continue to provide products that best meet the needs of users.”
