Apple Intelligence botched a notification summary about Luigi Mangione, and the BBC isn’t happy
this BBC is not happy Features Apple Intelligence’s notification summary feature. The company said the notification summary feature “generated false headlines” about Lugi Mangione, who was arrested this week on suspicion of killing the UnitedHealth Group CEO.
A summary of relevant notices shows that Mangione shot himself: “Luigi Mangione shot himself; Syrian mother wants Assad to pay; South Korean police raided Yoon Seok-yeol’s office.”
this Summary notification function Part of Apple Intelligence, introduced with iOS 18.1. A notification summary appears on top of a stack of notifications from the same app. Users can click the summary to display the full stack of notifications and view the original text of each notification.
Apple Intelligence appears to summarize three headline notifications from the BBC News app, each separated by a semicolon in the summary. The BBC has yet to share the full text of the original notification about Luigi Mangione that led to this false summary.
The Apple Intelligence Digest correctly summarizes two other headlines (one about the regime of Bashar al-Assad in Syria and the other about South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol).
“BBC News is the world’s most trusted news outlet,” a BBC spokesperson said in a statement. “It is vital to us that our audiences can trust any information or news published in our name, including notifications.”
The BBC said it had contacted Apple “to raise this concern and resolve the issue.” Apple has not yet commented.
In addition, the British Broadcasting Corporation Point to a post on Bluesky This suggests that Apple Intelligence mischaracterized a New York Times headline about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
These types of issues are not unique to Apple Intelligence and can affect anything supported by a large language model. If the BBC provided the full text of the original notice, it would be easier to see what went wrong with Apple Intelligence’s summary.
You can manage which notifications are aggregated on your iPhone by going to the Settings app, tapping Notifications, and then tapping Aggregate Notifications.
