Apple Intelligence errors with news alerts keep piling up, here’s the latest

In my opinion, the Apple Intelligence notification summary is one of the early notification summaries Killer AI feature. But they are not without flaws, as the BBC continues to highlight today with several new examples. Here are the latest Apple Intelligence bugs with news alerts.

BBC News highlights Apple’s ongoing intelligence errors

Last month, the British Broadcasting Corporation publicly expressed his dissatisfaction Worked with Apple on its new AI notification summary feature.

additional In iOS 18.1a feature that allows Apple Intelligence to summarize notification messages instead of providing actual written content.

Apple Intelligence is currently in beta, so Apple says you should expect bugs and report them so the system can continue to improve.

The BBC takes this message to heart. An example last December involved an AI claiming through a BBC News Alert summary that Luigi Mangione shot himself. This is completely untrue.

Today, the BBC’s Imran Rahman-Jones Published More examples of Apple Intelligence errors reported by users (through Apple Insider).

Apple’s news snippet incorrectly claimed that darts player Luke Littler won the PDC World Championship when he hadn’t even competed in the final.

The erroneous summary was written by artificial intelligence (AI) and was based on a BBC report about Littler’s win in the tournament semi-finals on Thursday night.

Within hours, another AI notification snippet mistakenly told some BBC Sport app users that tennis superstar Rafael Nadal had come out as gay.

No doubt users have seen countless examples, so I wouldn’t be surprised if stories like this continue to become more common.

9to5Mac’s Opinion

Notification summaries in all types of apps are prone to error, but understandably they can be especially problematic when summarizing breaking news.

Summarizing what’s already a summary first seems a bit unnecessary, so I wonder if Apple’s ultimate remedy will be to disable AI summarization by default in the News app.
