Apple has committed US$1.5 billion to satellite communications company Globalstar, including US$1.1 billion in cash investment and US$400 million in grants, to acquire a 20% stake in the company.
A game-changing partnership in low-Earth orbit connectivity
This new agreement between Apple and Globalstar is one of the largest investments in low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite technology by a consumer OEM to date.
Globalstar operates 31 satellites and plans to use Apple’s funds to expand its network.
The company has ordered up to 26 additional satellites to strengthen its low-Earth orbit constellation to ensure wider and more reliable coverage. Approximately 85% of Globalstar’s network capacity will continue to be dedicated to Apple services, highlighting the strategic significance of this partnership.
With Globalstar, Apple will further position itself as a leader in the D2D satellite communications market – enabling standards in this space smartphone Connect directly to satellite. The announcement has had a significant market impact, with Globalstar’s share price rising 31.4%.
