Apple is working on a doorbell camera with Face ID

Apple is reportedly developing a new smart doorbell camera that can use Face ID to unlock your door BloombergMark Goodman is at Today’s Power on communication. Gurman wrote that the camera could be released “at the earliest” by the end of 2025.

The lock works just like your iPhone, automatically unlocking your door when you or another resident looks at it. Like biometric login information on other Apple devices, the camera will feature the company’s Secure Enclave chip, which stores and processes Face ID information independently from the rest of the system hardware.

Gurman wrote that the device “may” work with existing third-party HomeKit smart locks, and the company may also work with smart lock companies to “deliver a complete system on day one.” He expects the camera to use Apple’s in-house “Proxima” combo Wi-Fi/Bluetooth chip, which is rumored to be used in new products HomePod Mini and Apple TV devices next year.

The doorbell camera joins broader rumors about Apple’s re-entry into the smart home centered around Apple Intelligence. These include another new smart home camera, a possibly Apple-branded TV, and new smart home displays — one of which is a simple iPad-like device that magnetically attaches to a wall mount or speaker dock, while Another display sits at the end of a robotic arm connected to the larger base.
