
Apple Made a Change to the AirTag That You Probably Didn’t Notice
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) today declare Apple has included a warning label aviation labelIt says on the box that the coin-cell battery should be kept out of the reach of children, as there is a serious risk of injury or death if the battery is ingested. Apple also added corresponding warning symbols to the AirTag battery compartment.
The announcement stated that Apple made these changes sometime after “Reese’s Law” takes effect in March 2024. The CPSC did not indicate whether these warnings would be added to AirTags only in the United States or globally.
“Reese’s Law” aims to prevent injuries and deaths caused by tiny round button batteries. The law is named after Reese Hamsmith, an infant who died in 2020 after swallowing a button battery from a remote control.
Now that many AirTags have been sold without these warnings, the CPSC said Apple will now display a warning about the dangers of coin-cell batteries in the Find My app every time it prompts users to replace their AirTags’ batteries.
