Apple may be fixing two of the Mac’s most annoying limitations

The past few years have brought new growth and innovation to Macs thanks to Apple silicon. But the Mac still has some limitations compared to its potential. Luckily, it sounds like two such worries are finally coming to an end.

Two limitations of Mac: cellular network and notch screen

Since the struggles of the 2010s ended and Apple silicon debuted, the Mac has settled into a good rhythm. Apple regularly introduces new Mac designs and chips, and macOS is keeping up with iOS updates more than ever.

There are still some unusual issues, but it sounds like Apple plans to fix at least some of them soon.

In the past few days, we’ve received two exciting reports about Macs:

1. Apple is looking into using its new internal modem in the first batch of cellular Macs, Author: Mark Gurman
2. In addition, the OLED MacBook Pro models will abandon the punch-hole design. For Omdia

These two changes may not appear until 2026, or even as late as 2027.

But when they do, they’ll address two of my biggest complaints about Macs right now.

Mac Confessions from an iPad Pro User

I should have mentioned up front M4 iPad Pro is my main computer.

I’ve long preferred the iPad to the Mac for a number of reasons, including the iPad’s historical advantage over Apple’s hardware and software investments.

A simple example of this advantage is Face ID. The feature launched on the iPhone in 2017, and the iPad Pro also gained it a year later in 2018.

I basically use my iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard 24/7. I have to say, Face ID works really well when the screen is pointed at your face all day long. It’s perfect for MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, and even Studio Display.

But seven years later, there’s still no Face ID on the Mac.

I have similar feelings about cellular and the notch.

iPad has enjoyed cellular support throughout its 14-year lifecycle. But for some reason, Apple never brought cellular technology to the Mac. I thought when Apple Silicon Macs came out it might solve this limitation, but years later I’m still waiting.

I love working on the go a lot, but using a hotspot on an iPhone isn’t reliable enough, and it drains the iPhone’s battery faster. The cellular capabilities on the iPad Pro are an asset.

The MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with notches aren’t a big deal for me, but they’re still annoying. Not because bangs are a big deal, but because my iPad Pro has never had bangs.

I know the iPad has larger bezels to support the user holding it, but the notch on the Mac still feels like outdated technology to me.

If Apple had to add notches to the Mac, why didn’t it launch something more modern like a tablet and dynamic island for the iPhone 14 Pro? The flagship iPhone ditched the classic notch two years ago and it’s never been seen on the iPad, but it remains a signature visual feature of the Mac.

Summary: How about touch?

Somehow I haven’t talked about touch yet. Touchscreen Mac Yes Reportedly in the worksbut who knows if they will actually come to market.

The reason I omit it is that personally I would rather have a honeycomb and notchless Mac than a touchscreen Mac. I think it would be great to have touch support on the Mac, but I don’t foresee me using it that often. However, I suspect that for many users, touch support is high on their wish list.
