Apple promises software update to address Apple Intelligence notification summary complaints

Apple has officially responded to growing concerns about incorrect Apple Intelligence notification summaries. In a statement today, the company said it will release a software update “in the coming weeks” that will clarify when Apple Intelligence summarizes notifications…

IN statement In an interview with the BBC, an Apple spokesperson said:

Apple Intelligence features are in beta and we’re constantly making improvements with the help of user feedback. A software update coming in the coming weeks will further clarify when the text displayed is a summary provided by Apple Intelligence. We encourage users to report an issue if they see an unexpected notification summary.

The BBC noted numerous instances of Apple Intelligence misrepresenting notification summaries from the BBC News app. One such example proposed that Luigi Mangione, accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, shot himself. Last week BBC posted another story highlighting many other examples of incorrect Apple Intelligence summaries.

Today’s announcement marks the first time Apple has responded to the BBC’s concerns. The news outlet said Apple Intelligence’s flawed alert summaries “undermine trust not only in the BBC, but in news and information in general.”

Apple hasn’t shared specific details about how it plans to address these issues. Currently, Apple Intelligence notification summaries are indicated by a small icon at the beginning of the summary text. It looks like an upcoming software update will change this interface to make it more obvious that the text is generated by artificial intelligence.

iOS 18.3 is currently in beta and is expected to be released to everyone later this month, and changes to notification summaries may be included in this update.

You can control which notifications are summarized on your iPhone by going to the Settings app, tapping Notifications, and then tapping Notification Summary.
