Apple Rumored to Launch Smart Home Doorbell With Face ID and More
Apple is reportedly in the early stages of developing a smart home doorbell and door lock system with Face ID BloombergMark Gurman.
in his Power on Gurman said in today’s newsletter that the doorbell will connect wirelessly to a compatible deadbolt lock, allowing users to automatically unlock the door using Face ID. He said the doorbell would likely work with a third-party HomeKit lock, but Apple could also partner with another brand to provide an all-in-one solution.
Apple’s doorbell will compete with Amazon’s Ring doorbell line, but Gurman wouldn’t say whether Apple’s solution can capture video.
Apple will almost certainly tout the privacy and security benefits of its smart home doorbell. Gurman predicts that if the product is released, it will feature Apple’s Rumored Wi-Fi chipit is said that there is a Secure Enclave to protect user data. If the doorbell does eventually offer video capture, Apple already has a HomeKit secure video service with end-to-end encryption for storing video in iCloud.
Gurman believes that Apple’s doorbell may not be launched until 2026 at the earliest.
