Apple Said Next-Generation CarPlay Would ‘Arrive’ in 2024… It Didn’t

It’s unclear whether the next generation of CarPlay will be launched. Apple has not publicly commented on its plans for a long time, but preparations are still being made behind the scenes throughout 2024. Appears in iOS 18.2 code.

Apple did not respond to our repeated requests for comment on the next generation of CarPlay in 2024.

It’s unclear whether Apple needs more time to complete development of the next generation of CarPlay, or if the automaker decides not to adopt the system, or something else. apple First preview of next-gen CarPlay Two and a half years ago at WWDC 2022. Apple said other committed automakers include Acura, Audi, Ford, Honda, Infiniti, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Polestar, Renault and Volvo.

Apple promises that the next generation of CarPlay will be deeply integrated with the dashboard and climate control, supporting multiple displays on the dashboard, a dedicated FM radio app, customizable widgets, and more. The interface will be customized according to each model and carmaker’s brand image.

Apple describes it this way:

This ensures the best coherent design experience for your car and iPhone – with designs from each automaker expressing your car’s character and brand. Vehicle functions such as radio and climate control are handled directly through CarPlay. If the next generation of CarPlay is launched, it is expected to be available only on new cars. It’s not an update to the standard CarPlay software.

Will the next generation of CarPlay finally launch, or will it become a vaporware? We don’t know, but it’s certainly not “coming in 2024” as planned.
