Apple Vision Pro apps get a 5G boost with visionOS 2.2

When you think of the Apple Vision Pro, 5G may not be the first thing that comes to mind. After all, there’s no built-in cellular option. But it turns out that iOS 18.2 and VisionOS 2.2 introduce unobtrusive 5G enhancements to the Apple Vision Pro app.

Enhance apps for 5G with Apple Vision Pro

While the Apple Vision Pro doesn’t have built-in cellular connectivity, you can use it through any hotspot without Wi-Fi. If you use a personal hotspot on your iPhone or iPad, you can even unlock a special mode for Apple Vision Pro.

Starting with iOS 18.2 and VisionOS 2.2, now available, Apple Vision Pro apps can take advantage of a new feature called “Enhance 5G for Apps with Apple Vision Pro.” Apple explains:

Personal Hotspot lets you share your iPhone or iPad’s cellular data connection with other devices, such as the Apple Vision Pro. If you’re on a supported carrier network and have an eligible plan, Enhance 5G for Apps can provide an optimized experience for supported apps on Apple Vision Pro.

In addition to Apple Vision Pro, you’ll need three things to unlock this feature:

1. Compatible iPhone or iPad
2. iOS 18.2 or higher and visionOS 2.2 or higher
3. Network providers supporting Enhance 5G

How to use enhanced 5G

The list of compatible iPhones and iPads includes:

• iPhone 14 and later models
• iPad Pro 13-inch (M4) Wi-Fi + Cellular
• iPad Pro 11-inch (M4) Wi-Fi + Cellular
• iPad Air 13-inch (M2) Wi-Fi + Cellular
• iPad Air 11-inch (M2) Wi-Fi + Cellular
• iPad Pro 12.9-inch (6th generation) Wi-Fi + Cellular
• iPad Pro 11-inch (4th generation) Wi-Fi + Cellular

From there, Apple provides steps for using Apple Vision Pro calls to enhance 5G apps:

1. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Click Cellular.
3. Click to enhance the app for 5G. If you don’t see it, make sure your iPhone or iPad supports it and that you’ve updated to the latest version of iOS or iPadOS. Please also contact your carrier to make sure they support this feature.
4. Click Enhance 5G for the app to turn it off or on again.

Once launched, you can enjoy “an optimized experience for apps supported on Apple Vision Pro.”

Enhanced Video Calling is a new technology feature that allows Verizon’s gold standard network to intelligently adjust and manage data from video messaging applications such as Facetime, WhatsApp and Zoom to provide a better experience for iPhone users.
