Apple’s AirPort router likely won’t be coming back, but don’t lose hope quite yet

according to Mark Gurman’s Power On NewsletterApple has not developed a new version of the AirPort wireless router. However, they are working on other things that might act as wireless access points, so don’t give up hope just yet.

Earlier this month, we got some new information about Apple’s internal wireless networking chip, which is called Proxima Centauri. So far, we know that this chip will be used in many home-related products, including Apple TV and HomePod. It will also come to iPhone 17 and Mac models later.

One interesting thing about this new chip is that it’s apparently complex enough that Apple could choose to turn it into a wireless router:

Proxima wafers are very complex; Theoretically Turn a home device like an Apple TV box or HomePod into a wireless access point. Google has released similar products before, including hybrid Wi-Fi routers and smart speakers.

Gurman pointed out that if Apple chooses to enable wireless access points, the wireless capabilities of the upcoming Apple TV and HomePod will not be a highlight at all.

Regardless, it’s nice to know it’s possible. If Apple wanted, we could once again have an Apple-designed wireless access point in our lives, similar to AirPort Express. Many people dream of this, especially since Apple’s AirPort line was discontinued a long time ago. Apple released its last AirPort device in 2013.

What do you think of the possibility of new Apple wireless access points? Let us know in the comments.
