long story short
- Apple is reportedly developing a doorbell that supports Face ID.
- The device will be able to unlock connected smart locks by scanning the user’s face.
- It could be over a year before we hear any official word from Apple about a new smart doorbell.
Apple is reportedly eyeing several new products in the smart home field. We’ve heard before that the company plans to launch Smart Home Center and home security camerasin addition to upgrades to Apple TV and HomePod mini smart speakers. Now, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple is developing another new product smart home devices — A doorbell with Face ID that can wirelessly unlock the deadbolt lock.
Gurman in his weekly Power On newsletter notes The upcoming Apple doorbell can connect to existing smart locks that support Apple’s HomeKit protocol. However, it is also possible that Apple will work with suppliers to provide a complete solution from day one.
The idea is that residents will be able to automatically unlock their doors by scanning their faces with the doorbell. Gurman expects the device to take advantage of Apple’s upcoming “Proxima” chipa domestic Bluetooth and Wi-Fi solution expected to be put into products starting in 2025.
If Apple launches a doorbell that supports Face ID, it will increase the risks for Google and Amazon, which have dominated the smart home field for some time. Of course, Apple still has a lot of work to do, but the iPhone maker appears to be firing on all cylinders to offer customers a complete smart home ecosystem, which includes all the products it’s reportedly developing.
Gurman said work on the Apple doorbell is still in its early stages and is more than a year away from the earliest release schedule.
