ASUS Drops Sneak Peek of Upcoming AMD AM5 Motherboards

Earlier today, ASUS released first looks at several of AMD’s upcoming AM5 motherboards, which we assume will feature the B850 and B840 chipsets that will be released within a couple of weeks, according to a Facebook post. The boards will most likely be presented at CES, which starts on January 7. The picture is confusing for obvious reasons, but what is clear is that there will be several different SKUs from all the typical ASUS sub-brands such as TUF Gaming and ROG.

We can also assume that there will be at least one Mini-ITX board and one micro-ATX board, with the latter being a TUF Gaming-branded board. We tried to clean up the image a bit, but ASUS managed to hide all the details of the possible model names, and most of the text is difficult to make out. Nothing special in terms of features, although it’s clear that we’ll eventually see some higher-end B850 boards, judging by the fact that at least three ROG Strix SKUs are coming. The question is whether there is a market for these boards, given that the B850 chipset is largely the same as the B650E chipset, but with additional PCIe 5.0 support for the M.2 slots and the lack of USB4, unlike its X870 counterpart.

Update January 1: ASUS also posted an image of its upcoming mid-range Intel boards on Facebook, but just like with AMD boards, ASUS confused the image, although not as much this time. In addition to the TUF Gaming and ROG Strix boards, the Intel lineup also includes a lower-tier Prime board. ASUS did not open the launch window for Intel motherboards.
