Asus, Samsung, and MSI announce world’s first 27-inch 4K OLED 240Hz monitors

The 27-inch 4K OLED 240Hz display looks like a bus: you wait for one, and then three show up at the same time. ASUS, Samsung, and MSI have all announced the industry’s next generation QD-OLED gaming monitors, which offer the benefits of a 4K OLED 240Hz panel in a smaller 27-inch (rather than 32-inch) size.

All three products appear to use the same fourth-generation QD-OLED panels from Samsung Display, which Asus says “have a longer lifespan than previous generation OLEDs.” both ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27UCDM and MSI MPG 272URX QD-OLED (Who names these things?) Including DisplayPort 2.1a (UHBR20), which provides 80Gbps bandwidth to support 4K at 240Hz without display stream compression (DSC). Samsung press release Information about its Odyssey OLED G8 (G81SF) doesn’t mention DisplayPort 2.1a compatibility, but it’s reasonable to assume it’s part of the specs list.

ASUS’s latest OLED display features a 26.5-inch viewable display.

Samsung Odyssey G8 is now available in 27-inch OLED 4K 240Hz model.

Both MSI and ASUS models support DisplayHDR True Black 400, and ASUS also supports Dolby Vision HDR. MSI and Asus both offer three-year warranties that include burn-in protection, but Samsung has yet to confirm the warranty for its latest G8 models. Samsung hasn’t fully detailed the specs of its latest G8 OLED model, but it’s reasonable to assume it will support at least DisplayHDR True Black 400.

Interestingly, Asus’ model only has a 26.5-inch viewable display, but both MSI and Samsung advertise their displays as 27-inches. All three offer OLED response times of 0.03 milliseconds, 240Hz update rates, and resolutions above 160PPI for improved text clarity, so the choice really comes down to design, features, and price. Unfortunately, Samsung, Asus, and MSI have yet to announce a release date or pricing.
