AT&T user’s erroneous $6,223 bill is reminder that AutoPay can wipe you out
It’s not uncommon for monthly bills to go up and down, but if your bill spikes one month for no apparent reason, your best bet is to contact the company and hope for the best, because AT&T Customers have learned.
Ordinary-Guava-8899 (via Android authority) said their bills hovered between $250 and $266 per month, including four-line calls and installment payments. This month, their bill suddenly jumped to $6,223.60.
Hello – I will try to go over what has happened with my att wireless bill since last Wednesday 12/11/24.
On Wednesday, December 12, 2011, I received a bill summary email from att. My bill is usually about $250-266 per month (4 lines) plus monthly phone installments. I checked my email and to my shock, my amount due was $6223.60! I literally almost had a heart attack. I’ve been with AT&T for over ten years and I’ve always had unlimited plans, so I know this is a mistake. The only change I made to my account was last month I moved the line to the first network. I was a first responder and was told that my monthly price would actually be lowered by a few bucks.

They revealed that they had not traveled abroad, which may result in your bill due to expansion roaming charges. They also said they had contacted AT&T There have been unlimited plans for over a decade, so there’s no chance of anything out of the ordinary causing your bill to spike.
The only difference this month is the switch to FirstNet, which routes AT&T For first responders. This shift makes sense because Usual-Guava-8899 was the first responder and was told their bill would be reduced after the move.
When they called the customer service line, they were told their bill for the month was $205, which made them even more confused because their account dashboard showed they were due $6,223.60.
Usual-Guava-8899 went to a store the next day and was told that their bill was indeed $6223.60. Apparently, during the move to FirstNet, they were mistakenly put on a pay-per-day plan and charged $2 per MB for 3,097MB of data.
Despite acknowledging this, store staff were unable to immediately resolve the issue. The issue remains unresolved, leaving them wondering if they will be charged late fees or if their accounts will be terminated due to the December 15 expiration date.
Usual-Guava-8899 expressed their disappointment AT&Tthey rightly wonder why the company doesn’t have a system in place to prevent such errors from happening.
The incident is also a reminder that enabling automatic payments is not always a good idea. Usual-Guava-8899 has an automatic payment feature, but they deactivate it before collecting the outstanding amount.
This is why I will never use automatic payments! Companies, and even banks, make mistakes in solving problems that can put you out of business and snowball from bad to bad.

Everyone seems to be covering this up, $2/MB is insane. There is no world, no situation, no thing that can make any company’s price an acceptable price, travel or otherwise. 100% there is a bug somewhere in the code.

Others also recounted encountering similar issues in the past, and most assured Usual-Guava-8899 that their issues might be resolved.
