AWS to invest at least $11B in new Georgia data centers

Amazon Web Services Inc. will spend at least $11 billion to expand its data center capacity in Georgia.

The AWS platform is based on 35 cloud regions—clusters of data centers that include multiple facilities in a single geographic area. These facilities, or Availability Zones, have separate power, cooling, and networking infrastructure. This arrangement means that a local technical issue at one site is unlikely to impact other data centers in the same cloud region.

The company does not yet have a cloud region in Georgia. However, it supports several small infrastructure clusters, primarily in the Atlanta metropolitan area.

Last year ABC launched Local AWS zone in the city. A local zone is a kind of miniature data center that is located closer to users than the main Amazon division facilities. This proximity reduces network latency for client applications.

AWS also maintains several AWS Direct Connect hubs in Georgia. Direct Connect allows companies to send their network traffic directly to the cloud platform without routing data through the public network, improving productivity. This arrangement also has cybersecurity benefits.

In addition to Direct Connect sites and the Georgia local zone, AWS supports Amazon CloudFront on-premises servers. CloudFront is the company’s content delivery network. It places content such as web pages close to users to reduce latency and thereby speed up loading speeds.

According to AWS, its investment in Georgia will create at least 550 new jobs. In addition, the company expects the initiative to support thousands of positions in the local construction sector and data center supply chain.

Amazon uses more environmentally friendly grades of steel and concrete when designing its data center buildings. The company expects the move to achieve a 35% reduction in carbon emissions compared to the industry average.

Within its data centers, AWS simplifies the equipment that transmits power to information technology equipment. Amazon will move redundant power supplies closer to server racks and reduce the number of fans used to remove hot air. The changes will reduce the number of potential points of failure by 20%.
