Even though it was only released a year ago iron man and dark knightMichael’s Transformers It feels almost completely disconnected from all the CGI-heavy blockbusters that followed. Superhero movies tend to be more satirical, Transformers It’s a shockingly honest film, filled with overwhelming heart and almost no cynicism – despite being a film based on a toy brand.

I’m not here to tell you Transformers Good – This is definitely good, but you should already know that. I’m here to tell you to rewatch Transformers A brief look at what the blockbusters of the 2010s might look like. I’m not really sure if it’s better or worse than what we got, but it’s fun to rewatch the movie now because it looks completely different from anything that came after it – excluding its own sequel, of course. ——Austin Gosling

upgrade Probably the best cyberpunk movie of the past decade. The story follows a man who is paralyzed after a horrific car accident that was staged to assassinate his wife. To avenge her death, he received a computer chip that controlled his body, granting him incredible strength, speed, and agility.

It’s an easy enough concept to recognize, but upgrade manages to make it feel fresh and original, thanks in large part to its extremely funny script and a stellar performance from Logan Marshall-Green, who plays some of the film’s funniest moments as a hapless passenger , subjected to the violence and mayhem his body perpetrated. —AG

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

director: Kerry Conran
Throw:
Grace Paltrow, Jude Law, Giovanni Ribisi

Kerry Conran’s 2004 pulp adventure was a labor of love. Conceived with his brother, production designer Kevin Conran, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow Jude Law stars as Joseph Sullivan, a mercenary fighter pilot with the call sign “Sky Captain” who has an affair with former reporter Polly Perkins (Gwyneth) Paltrow) team up to stop a mad scientist from terrorizing the world with his army of giants.

The film is an unabashed homage to the adventure serials of the 1930s, with a dieselpunk design and towering skyscrapers flanked by floodlight beacons and floating zeppelins. Sky Captain and the World of TomorrowThe use of “virtual location” technology will have a major impact, inspiring the look and production of films such as this 300 and sin city. Conlan hasn’t directed a film since, but if this is the only film he makes, it will be a wonderful legacy. ——Dusan Egan
