Best VPN for Streaming in 2024
ProtonVPN
If you want a free VPN and still be able to stream the US Netflix library, then ProtonVPN is an ideal choice. Proton VPN is currently the only Free VPN CNET recommends it because it’s secure, safe to use, and has no limitations on speed or usage. Technically, Proton VPN’s free servers are not optimized for streaming, but we still achieved adequate speeds and were able to smoothly stream Netflix content through the VPN’s free US servers.
Proton VPN’s premium service includes over 9,300 servers in 112 countries (as opposed to the free plan’s 5 countries), and we were able to access content from multiple Netflix regional libraries as well as Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney The content above is added. Its ability to access a large number of international Netflix libraries, including the Egyptian Netflix library (which rivals NordVPN and Surfshark are difficult to unblock), makes Proton VPN’s paid tier a worthwhile choice. The only issue we encountered was that we were unable to stream Disney Plus on MacOS through Proton’s US servers, although it works fine on other platforms. Paid subscriptions to Proton VPN cost $10 per month, $60 for the first year (then $80 per year) or $108 total for the first two years (then $80 per year).
private network access
Wallet friendly private network accessOr PIA is an open source VPN provider that is very privacy-focused. PIA costs only $12 per month, $40 per year, and $79 every three years. Unlike many other VPN providers, PIA doesn’t increase prices, so your plan should renew at the same price as your original purchase. While PIA works well on Netflix and Disney Plus, it doesn’t perform well on Amazon Prime Video. PIA has apps for nearly every platform, including Windows, MacOS, Linux (with GUI), web browsers, iOS/iPadOS, Android/Android TV, and Apple TV.
Although PIA is affordable compared to many VPN competitors, it’s hard to recommend for streaming due to its middling speed performance. In our tests, we saw an astounding 49% drop in average internet download speeds. People with fast connections (50 megabits per second or higher) should be fine, but slower or less reliable connections (such as satellite connections) may not work as well. (For reference, Netflix recommendations The minimum download speed for a single 4K video stream is 15Mbps. force.
IP disappears
IP disappears A good streaming VPN if you are new to VPNs and want a solution that is easy to use and can help you watch content on various streaming platforms. During testing, we were able to access the Netflix library in a limited number of regions, as well as content from Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney Plus. While some VPNs may struggle to deliver across platforms, we were able to use IPVanish to access every streaming service we tested on every device. The main problem with IPVanish is its speed. Inconsistencies in IPVanish’s speeds (average speed losses of up to 44% in our 2024 tests) can impact your streaming experience, especially when watching 4K Ultra HD videos.
With IPVanish, you can access servers in 56 countries, which is more than NordVPN (113 countries), ExpressVPN (105 countries), Surfshark (100 countries), Proton VPN (112 countries) Other options like PIA and PIA are much less available (91 countries), so if you’re looking to stream content from a specific region, you’ll want to check IPVanish’s server page Make sure the provider has servers in these locations before purchasing a subscription. IPVanish’s monthly subscription fee is $13 per month, which is comparable to many other VPNs, but its annual plans start cheaper than NordVPN and ExpressVPN, at $40 for the first year. IPVanish offers a two-year plan, which costs a total of $53 for the first two years. Note that the price for one- and two-year plans jumps significantly after the initial one or two years to $90 per year or $180 total over two years. Considering its slow internet speeds, small server network, and mid-range price, IPVanish isn’t ideal for streaming enthusiasts.
mole
mole An excellent choice for privacy-conscious VPN users. It’s also one of the fastest VPNs we’ve tested, with an impressive 13% overall speed loss. It works well with Netflix, Disney Plus, and Hulu, but in our tests it struggled to stream Amazon Prime Video and doesn’t work with smart TVs or streaming devices like the Amazon Fire TV Stick or Apple TV Provides full native support. This, coupled with its relatively small server network, located in only 44 countries, makes Mulvad a difficult sell for people who want to use a VPN for streaming.
Mulvad requires zero personal information to sign up, not even an email address, and charges a flat fee of $5 per month, whether you use it for a month, a year, or five years. You can pay as you see fit and add as many months to your account as you like, but Mulvad doesn’t have any kind of recurring subscription as it strives to collect as little data as possible. If you are not satisfied with the service, you can apply for a refund within 30 days of purchase.
