Cancel unwanted Apple subscriptions and save money

It’s a new year and it’s a great time to right some of the wrongs of the past. This includes not paying for apps and services you no longer use. Luckily, it’s easy—if you know how to cancel subscriptions on Apple devices.

Here’s how to find everything you’ve signed up for through the App Store, find out how much it’s costing you, and cancel your subscription if you’ve lost interest. Or perhaps save some money by changing your billing frequency.

App Store subscriptions can accumulate

There’s nothing wrong with subscriptions. You pay a streaming service every month in exchange for watching its movies and TV shows. The same goes for app subscriptions. Developers receive a recurring income that allows them to continue to improve the software, and you get apps that continually add features and/or perform better.

But it’s easy to forget about the subscription and keep paying for things you don’t use. (No new Star Trek episodes, Paramount+, for example, is easy to forget.)

Here’s how to find out all your App Store subscriptions. And how to use Apple’s software to cancel subscriptions you no longer need.

If you’re ready to cancel unwanted subscriptions, it’s best to do so now. The start of a new year is a good time to think about whether you’re really getting your money’s worth from Netflix or Seventeen magazine. Perhaps it’s time to give him a rest.

How to Find All Your App Store Subscriptions on iPhone

Apple conveniently puts all the services and apps you subscribe to in one list.

To view the list:

  1. Open App Store app on your iPhone.
  2. Click on yours account image in the upper right corner.
  3. Click on Subscriptions on the resulting page.

This will open a list of everything you’ve signed up for through the App Store. This includes video and audio streaming services, Apple Care+, third-party apps and more.

By the way, you can open the same list from Settings > [ USER NAME] > Subscriptions if you prefer.

How to cancel subscriptions on Apple devices

A list of App Store subscriptions shows you at a glance how much each one costs and when it will next renew. For more detailed information, click on each item in the list to open its individual page. A full description will be displayed with details about whether the subscription renews annually, monthly or weekly. The next billing date is also displayed.

The most important thing for our purposes is a convenient link to Cancel subscription. Click on it if you find any services or applications that you are done with. (If you change your mind later, you can look Inactive section that lists previously canceled subscriptions.)

Changing Billing Frequency

You can easily change the billing frequency for your App Store subscriptions. Or cancel them.

The details page for each service you’ve signed up for allows you to change whether you’ll be billed monthly, annually, and so on.

The page shows you what your current plan is. If there are other options then View all plans connection. Click on it and you will see the different options and their costs. Select another option if you want to make changes.

Sorry to be a little human, but you can almost always save money by signing up for an annual subscription. This is the best choice for the services you like. On the other hand, a monthly subscription gives you the opportunity to save money by canceling the service at any time if you get tired of it.

I can’t cancel All Subscriptions associated with Apple this way

The list includes subscriptions you subscribed to through the App Store. Unfortunately, this may not be the case for every subscription you have, even if it’s for a service you use on your Mac, iPhone, or iPad.

An obvious example is Amazon Prime Video. Many people who signed up for this streaming service signed up for it on Amazon’s website rather than through the App Store. This means that it will not appear in the list of Apple subscriptions, even if the subscriber watches the service on an iPad.

So you will need to check your credit card statements and perhaps your memory for others. Then use those services’ apps or websites to cancel your subscriptions—there’s only so much Apple can do.
