
CES 2025 security: What to expect after Tesla Cybertruck explosion
When the annual Consumer Electronics Show, better known as KESbegins January 7 in Las Vegas, visitors will likely notice “visible law enforcement presence“at a one-day event organized by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA).
In a statement published by Mashable, John T. Kelly, vice president and show director of CTA, acknowledged security concerns after Tesla Cybertruck explosion outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas on New Year’s Day.
“In response to the recent tragic events, we have strengthened our already robust safety protocols,” Kelly said. “We continue to monitor the situation and remain in communication with our security partners and law enforcement officials.”

“With regards to new security measures, we have robust security measures in place and the best way to protect the show is to not talk about these measures in detail,” the spokesperson said.
A public affairs officer for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department told Mashable in an email that the agency “always” plans to have additional officers at major events in Las Vegas. They did not respond to questions about additional steps law enforcement could take to improve safety.
Safety Measures to Expect at CES
CES has safety measures outlined posted for the event on its website.
Participants must present government-issued photo identification to receive a badge, and they cannot obtain badges on behalf of others.
Baggage restrictions prohibit participants from bringing bags of any size, including laptop and computer bags. CES encourages attendees to bring clear bags, and attendees are not allowed to bring more than two small bags onto show floors.
Attendees can also expect K9 kennels at venue entrances, as well as random security checks. As a “enhanced security measure,” a “vehicle containment plan” will be in place near key sites. A CTA spokesperson told Mashable that the tactic was part of the event’s security strategy.
The CES app offers attendees the ability to contact CES or venue security if they want to report something suspicious. If an emergency evacuation is required, CES will share updates and instructions through the event app, CES social media channels and public announcements.
The exhibition is an important event for companies involved in consumer electronics and technology. Last year the event was attended by more than 138,000 people. LG, Samsung, Siemens, L’Oreal and Panasonic are among this year’s exhibitors.
