Companion follows Ex Machina with a horrifying man-machine pairing
Details at Companionproducer’s debut horror thriller Barbarian directed by Zack Cregger, have been scant since Warner Bros. released the film. mysterious first teaser back in October. With less than a month until the theatrical release on January 31, the studio has finally decided to lift the curtain by releasing the first full trailer. And as for the premise, I’m sure I did it. No you’ll see it happen. (Spoilers ahead for plot points shown in the trailer, which likely imply twists and turns in the film itself.)
Sophie Thatcher (English)Heretic) plays Iris, a young woman swept off her feet by Josh (Jack Quaid), a charming young billionaire she meets while grocery shopping. After being invited to her new beau’s lakeside estate for a weekend, Iris reveals a terrible secret: she’s actually a sex robot programmed to obey her master’s whims, and their entire courtship was just one of his sick fantasies. The solution, of course, is simple and familiar Alex Garland Former car: Iris needs to kill everyone who gets in the way of her escape.
This certainly explains the inexplicable weirdness of the teaser, which shows Iris handcuffed to a chair at the dinner table and watching, tearfully but with surprising calm, as her hand catches fire. While this full trailer appears to be giving away the film’s big twist, I’m betting first-time writer/director Drew Hancock and Cregger have more in store given the cheeky tone of the footage we’ve seen so far. .
