Day of the Earth: The Looney Tunes Movie was targeting a worldwide release date of February 28, 2025, but its path to the big screen has been winding and often delayed after being abandoned by upcoming films. Warner Bros. Discovery Executive David Zaslav ended up landing a theatrical demo from the unlikeliest of indie distribution partners as a direct-to-streaming feature.
Now take a look at the hilarious first trailer, released on December 13 ahead of its Oscar-qualifying run, ahead of its worldwide release next year.
This hand-drawn work represents the first fully animated film Looney Tunes With a long history of 80 years, it originally debuted at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France in June this year. But it’s been a very bumpy ride for this imaginative sci-fi project, which began in 2021 as an animated film from Warner Bros. No less than 15 writers and story consultants put their names to this far-flung cartoon tale, which centers on Piglet and Daffy Duck stumbling upon a sinister alien conspiracy and using a blob of Mind controlled bubble gums have conquered the earth and tried their best to save our planet from these candy crazy aliens.
When Warner Bros. completes its merger with Discovery Channel in 2022, “The Day the Earth Exploded”, like “Batgirl” and “Coyote vs. Acme,” is included in the budget, targeting tax cuts. Following a successful screening in Annecy, independent distributor Ketchup Entertainment stepped up to claim domestic distribution honors. Its talented vocal lineup includes Eric Bauza, Candy Minogue, Peter MacNicol, Wayne Knight, Fred Tatasciore and Laraine Newman.
“The Day the Earth Exploded is a historic moment for the Looney Tunes franchise, and we are honored to partner with Warner Bros. Animation to bring the film to audiences in theaters. Nick Cross serves as art director and Aaron Spurgeon serves as production designer on the animated feature. Warner Bros. Animation’s Sam Lester and Pete Browngardt serve as executive producers.
