Dell mocked at its own press launch for copying Apple’s names
Dell was ridiculed in its own press release for copying Apple iPhone naming convention for their computers. Both laptops and desktops are now divided into three tiers whose names are taken straight from the iPhone line: Dell, Dell Pro and Dell Pro Max.
Despite the claim that this is done solely for simplicity and not for copying purposes. AppleDell has really managed to make its PC lineup even less clear than before…
Bloomberg reports that Dell is ditching its own sub-brands such as XPS and Inspiron in favor of a new naming convention.
Now, most of the company’s new PCs will be divided into three tiers: Dell, Dell Pro and Dell Pro Max. […]
“Customers really prefer names that are easy to remember and easy to pronounce,” Chief Operating Officer Jeff Clark said during a pre-show briefing with reporters. Buyers won’t have to waste time “figuring out our nomenclature, which can sometimes be a little confusing,” he said.
If Dell was hoping that no one would notice the origin of these names, it was disappointed.
“I’m wondering why you guys didn’t go with something original since you basically have Apple branding here,” one viewer joked. Another said: “Your brand is very similar to Apple – don’t you just follow them?”
The new levels don’t even make life easier for customers because all three Levels are divided into Basic, Plus and Premium options. Is Pro Plus better than Pro Max Base? What about Pro Premium and Pro Max Plus?
Engadget notes that things turn into a farce when Dell also adds size labels to its desktop PCs.
Just try reading the names Dell Pro Max Micro and Dell Pro Max Mini without letting your brain self-destruct. […] And yes, you can expect these cars to have their own Plus and Premium sub-brands.
So yes, there will indeed be a Dell Pro Max Micro Plus.
This is worse than the Apple Mac model names in the 1990s (Macintosh IIvx, Macintosh Centris/Quadra 610, PowerBook Duo 280c, etc.) before Steve came back and tore them all up.
