Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Writer Reveals Canceled Plans for Adam Jensen’s Story to Lead Into the Original Deus Ex

Eidos-Montréal’s beloved prequel series Deux Ex famously ended on a cliffhanger. Humanity is dividedupsetting fans. Now they know exactly what they missed.

For podcast episode From Script to LifeHuman Revolution and Mankind Divided writer Mark Cecere discussed where protagonist Adam Jensen’s story would have gone in the third game if it hadn’t been cancelled. The writers intended for Jensen to destroy one member of the Illuminati rather than the Illuminati itself, which would result in “Bob Page becoming Bob Page.”

Bob Page – antagonist original Deus Ex gamethe hugely influential 2000 cyberpunk adventure from Ion Storm. Thus, Jensen’s fate is as follows: cause Two Ex.

“He will never be able to catch up with the Illuminati,” Secere explained. “We know this. We know that the Illuminati will continue to exist until 2050. We know that some of the same characters who are part of the Illuminati inner circle are in 2050. So Jensen will never be able to get there and do anything specific.

“So what could happen? This was a question we once tried to answer. So we had one name that we could get rid of, and that’s the one that Jensen could catch and do something about.

“The consequences were that Jensen’s actions caused Deus Ex to appear, if that makes sense. And that’s the tragedy of Jensen, is that he causes what happens after – by doing something – he forces Bob Page to become Bob Page. That’s where we were heading.”

Unfortunately, it is unlikely that we will ever see this version of events. Following the release of Mankind Divided in 2016, previous owner Square Enix tasked Eidos-Montréal with other projects, including a 2021 project. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Then, in 2022, Square Enix sold Eidos-Montréal and the Deus Ex franchise to the controversial umbrella company Embracer. Work on a new Deus Ex game has already begun. but this was also canceled in 2024which led to significant layoffs at Eidos-Montréal.

At that time, Elias Toufexis, who played Adam Jensen, said goodbye to the character for what seemed like forever, saying:: “alas, his story seems to be over.” Although Toufexis confirmed that he did not work on the last canceled Deus Ex game and expressed hope that another company could obtain the Deus Ex license, this seemed final.

Now, reacting to Cecere’s comments, Toufexis said.: “Hey, that would be fun, right?”
