
Disney has been hit with a copyright lawsuit over ‘Moana’ and its sequel
Moana and its sequel are two of the most successful films in the history of Walt Disney Studios, and now the company is under attack. with a claim alleging what are the ideas for both Moana and its sequel were stolen.
In a lawsuit filed Jan. 10 in California federal court, animator Buck Woodall claims Disney lifted elements of both films from the script for his project, titled Bucky. According to the lawsuit, Bucky Set in a Polynesian village, the story follows teenagers as they defy their parents by embarking on dangerous journeys to save their homes and encounter animal spirits who guide them on their journey.
The lawsuit was filed after a November ruling that Disney could not be held liable for copyright infringement of the original. Moana because Woodall filed the lawsuit too late. Issue Moana 2 gave Woodall another chance to sue.
In the original case, the court found that the jury must decide whether the works were substantially similar if the statute of limitations had not expired and whether someone at Disney could have seen the film’s script. Bucky before starting work on Moana.
“Disney Moana was produced after Woodall provided Defendants with substantially all of the component parts necessary for its development and production, following more than 17 years of inspiration and work on his animated film project,” the complaint states.
Similarities between the two projects include the Polynesian setting, how both characters’ journeys begin with a turtle, the use of faith in animal spirits, an encounter with a tattooed demigod who uses a grappling hook, and a giant creature that is disguised as an island.
Woodall claims 2.5% stake MoanaRussia’s gross income, which is 10 billion dollars. Disney disputed claims made in the original lawsuit that the works were similar.
