Disney merges Hulu Live TV service with Fubo, new sports bundle now imminent

Disney and Fubo announced that they are merging their Hulu + Live TV and Fubo services into a single business. Here’s what that means, including why it will lead to a revival of the planned Venu Sports package.

Venu Sports is a key part of the new Disney and Fubo merger

Last year Disney, FOX and Warner Bros Discovery jointly announced launch of a new sports package service called Venu.

Venu Sports will cost $42.99 per month and include sports from all three major streaming players. Venu was essentially very similar to the original Hulu, but for sports. He brought several companies together into a streaming joint venture.

Venu was supposed to launch in the fall, but Fubo’s lawsuit stopped it.

Now, today’s merger announcement means a lot to Venu, Disney, Hulu, Fubo and many others.

Here are some consequences and details:

  • All laws introduced by Fubo were officially regulated.
  • Venu Sports can now finally launch at any time
  • Hulu+ Live TV is merging with Fubo as a new standalone business
  • However, Hulu+ Live TV and Fubo will still be offered as separate services.
  • Finally, Fubo will create its own sports service with Disney-owned properties like ABC and ESPN+.

Obviously, this merger has many implications, but it will likely be some time before we see the full effect.

Sports chaos in the age of streaming

Today’s merger news underscores just how confusing sports can be in the age of streaming.

It’s also especially wild when you consider that not only is Venu a big new sports offering for Disney, but it’s not necessarily the company’s main sports project.

Disney is also hard at work launching its own standalone ESPN streaming service (not to be confused with ESPN+) this fall. This new service will essentially offer a cable version of ESPN programming, but on a streaming app.

No wonder Apple wanted to strike comprehensive streaming agreement with MLS several years ago. If you can’t broadcast every sport on your streamer, creating a compelling sports option for users can be extremely difficult.
