Don’t worry — AMD’s RX 9070 XT is set to launch in a matter of ‘weeks’

How soon? Well, AMD’s Frank Azor says that “we’re talking weeks” until graphics cards arrive, saying, “When we talk about Q1, you know, we’re not talking about March 31st.”

Before I let the speculation get out of hand, I should point out that the concept of a “week” is still quite broad. We could be talking about late January, early February, or even March. But Azor assured me that AMD has everything it needs to properly launch the next generation of graphics cards, saying that they were almost not included in the presentation due to time constraints. And in fairness, AMD announced a lot, from Ryzen 9 9950X3D to the new Ryzen Z2 line chips for pocket computers.

Confirming some online speculation, Azor also said that AMD is waiting to see what Nvidia does. Now we know about RTX 5090 for $2000as well as three other cards from Nvidia’s RTX 50-series lineup, and it appears AMD wanted to see where its new GPU would fall in comparison to the green giant. This makes sense since AMD has confirmed that it is abandoning its flagship battle with Nvidia this generation to focus on mid-range cards.

However, it is unclear where AMD’s new GPU will appear. Nvidia’s performance charts don’t have much detail, and most of the performance confused by Nvidia’s new DLSS 4 multi-frame generation. Noting that he has “tremendous respect” for Nvidia, Azor said that performance charts are essentially “useless.” And on this issue, to be honest, I agree. The charts are as vague as they come, and they certainly don’t give the full picture of what PC gamers can expect from Nvidia’s new graphics cards.

AMD has already stated that there is nothing wrong with the RDNA 4 line. Words are paper thin, but I’ve seen both the RX 9070 XT and AMD’s vastly improved FSR 4 in person. If there are any serious problems with AMD’s new graphics cards, I highly doubt they will suffer the horrors of CES.
