Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on PC requires GeForce RTX 20 or Radeon 6000 series GPU, 155GB of storage

Something to look forward to: The second part of Square Enix’s planned three-part remake of Final Fantasy VII will arrive on PC almost a year after the PlayStation 5 version. Details about PC performance and features have been revealed along with a full list of system requirements.

Although Final Fantasy VII Rebirth uses a different graphics engine, the PC system requirements are very similar to the notoriously demanding Final Fantasy XVI, so its performance may be similar. Fans of the sequel, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, released in 2022, noted a significant improvement in the characteristics of the sequel.

The game’s 155GB memory requirement shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who’s installed high-end games in recent years. However, for those still using older graphics cards, you should know that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth does not support the AMD RX 5000 or Nvidia GTX 10 series.

Achieving 1080p, 30fps gameplay at low graphics settings requires at least an RX 6600, Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060, or Intel Arc A580. Requires shader model 6.6 or later, but it is unclear if this prevents RDNA1 and Pascal cards from running the game. Alan Wake II has similarly stringent minimum requirements due to its use of mesh shaders. More recently, Indiana Jones and the Big Circle blocked older maps because they require hardware-accelerated ray tracing.

While Square Enix recommends using high-end GPUs like the RX 7900 XTX or RTX 4080 for 4K gaming at 60fps and high graphics settings, the specifications don’t take scaling into account. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth supports Nvidia DLSS, but the company has not confirmed whether FSR and XeSS are also included.

Square Enix also notes that anyone using a 4K display should have at least 12GB of VRAM. Many recent high-end games have experienced performance issues at 4K resolution when running on GPUs with 8GB or 10GB of memory, such as the RTX 3080.

The PC version of the game features improved lighting and textures compared to the PlayStation 5 version, and DualSense functionality is also supported via USB. While Square Enix can’t promise Steam Deck verification just yet, the company is optimizing the game for play on portable gaming PCs, which could improve overall performance.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will be available on Steam and the Epic Games Store on January 23. The full suggested retail price is $69.99, but a generous 30 percent early order discount is available before launch, bringing the pre-order price down to $48.99.

While Square Enix has not confirmed whether the game will receive a free demo for users looking to test out their PCs, the chances of seeing it are high as Final Fantasy XVI and the PS5 version of Rebirth offered demos.
