Freewrite Wordrunner is a mechanical keyboard from the makers of distraction-free writing gadgets

Astrohaus sells portable writing devices that are distraction-free. under the Freewrite brand for many years. Most are described as portable typewriters or modern versions of word processor hardware.

But new Freewrite Wordrunner It’s something different: instead of a separate device, it’s a mechanical keyboard designed for use with PCs or mobile devices. Astrohaus will debut the keyboard at CES and plans to launch a Kickstarter campaign in February and begin shipping the Freewrite Wordrunner to backers by the end of the year.

While there is no shortage of mechanical keyboards available today, many are designed for gamers or avid keyboard enthusiasts. Wordrunner stands out as a model built primarily for writing.

For example, the function bar has customizable keys that let you quickly navigate text documents without resorting to keyboard shortcuts. For example, instead of pressing a two-key combination to undo or redo an action, you can press a single button. There are also keys for searching and replacing, and going to the beginning or end of a paragraph. There are also three macro keys that can be assigned to custom functions.

There’s also a red joystick in the top left corner for controlling media playback and, perhaps most unusually, a “Word Meter” in the top center that tracks the number of words you’ve typed using a mechanical counter. I think your score will be saved until you hit reset, which can be useful if you want to make sure you’re meeting your novel writing goals. There is also a timer for tracking “writing sprints.”

The keyboard has a USB-C port for wired connections, as well as Bluetooth for wireless connections. It can be paired with multiple devices so you can switch from typing on your computer to typing on your phone with a single keystroke. The keyboard officially supports Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, although I imagine you’ll be able to use at least the basic functionality with Linux.

The Freewrite Wordrunner has an aluminum body, 88 keys and a non-ten-key design (no numeric keypad), and a built-in palm rest. It measures 14.7 x 12.6 x 0.7 inches and weighs 1.9 pounds.
