- Windows 11 24H2 Auto HDR bug causes color display errors
- There is also the problem of game crashing
- Microsoft promises a fix soon
24H2 updates for Windows 11 There’s another bug affecting PC gamers and others that causes colors to be displayed incorrectly.
Microsoft The issue has been confirmed in their published health status Dashboardnotifying us that this error occurs for those who have enabled Automatic high dynamic range feature.
Windows Latest According to reports, the issues with the 24H2 update not only affect the game, but also general colors on the desktop, which may be rendered incorrectly until you go to the Settings app. Windows 11 And turn off the “Automatically manage app colors” option.
Microsoft didn’t mention bugs related to anything other than PC games when using Auto high dynamic rangealthough.
Auto HDR Yes Windows 11 Ironically, this feature is designed to automatically enhance the visuals of your game. If you turn on Auto HDR, it will apply HDR effects to SDR games, which means the game will appear more vivid and immersive on an HDR monitor.
Of course, games that support HDR natively will provide a better visual experience, but automatic HDR is much better than playing in SDR – unless, like this bug, it completely messes up the colors for you.
This is not only related to unstable colors but also game crashes
In the same support document, Microsoft explains that Auto HDR bugs not only cause colors to appear incorrectly in games, but can also cause some games to crash.
Windows Latest describes its own experience with the issue and cites Reddit topic User Rachidramone described multiple games completely freezing or crashing (including popular games like call of Duty“Assassin’s Creed” and “Far Cry”).
Microsoft’s suggestions for fixing this issue are to turn off Auto HDR in Settings or avoid using Windows 11 24H2 and stick with it 23H2 instead.
In addition, Microsoft has implemented a “compatibility hold” on PCs with Auto HDR enabled, which means these devices will not receive the 24H2 update. When the issue is resolved, 24H2 will roll out to these computers again.
Microsoft also warns not to bypass its upgrade block and install 24H2 manually (e.g. using a media creation tool) if you use automatic HDR at all.
For those who have installed the 24H2 update, Microsoft recommends turning off Auto HDR to get everything back to normal. You can do this by going to Settings > System > Displaythen select graphics. Under the Default Settings panel you will see a toggle for Auto HDR, you can simply turn it off to disable it for all games, which is my recommendation. (However, if you prefer, you can also do this on a per-game basis through the Application Customizations panel.)
Microsoft said it is working to fix the bug and will provide more information as it becomes available. According to Windows Late, the solution should be available in the near future.
Windows 11 24H2 is clearly still finding its footing, especially when it comes to gaming. Unfortunately, a series of bugs in 24H2 are plaguing PC gamers, including Anti-cheating system issuessome type of random crash, and some Especially serious glitches in Ubisoft games.
If you don’t want to deal with unexpected bugs and issues, it’s best to be a little cautious when updating to 24H2, and possibly hold off on upgrading until it becomes more stable and predictable. Hopefully this won’t happen for too long.
