Gemini in Google Drive now supports folder-level queries

Google has Gemini enhanced in Google Drive with new folder-centric features. Now, users can direct AI interactions to specific folders, allowing them to request a summary of the folder’s contents, find specific files within it, and even analyze the overall theme of the files.

This enhancement expands Gemini’s existing capabilities in Google Drive, which previously allowed users to summarize single documents, extract key facts, and interact with PDFs. By adding folder-level support, Google is making Gemini a more powerful tool for organizing and understanding the content of your Drive.

Imagine you have a folder full of research papers for a project. Now, instead of reviewing each document manually, you can simply ask Gemini to summarize the contents of a binder for a quick overview of key findings and themes. Or, if you’re looking for a specific file but can’t remember its exact name, you can ask Gemini to find it based on keywords or a content description.

To use this new feature, you can mention the folder name in your Gemini query using the “@” symbol. For example, you could ask “summarize the files in @folder” or “what is the theme of the content in @folder”. Gemini will then process the information in that specific folder to provide you with the answers you need.

This update is particularly useful for those working with large amounts of files in Google Drive. It simplifies the process of finding and analyzing information, allowing users to focus on their work rather than getting bogged down in file management.

It’s important to note that Gemini can only analyze text files, PDFs, spreadsheets, and presentations. Other file types such as images or videos are not currently supported.

This update will be rolled out gradually to Google Workspace customers with the Gemini plug-in, including Business, Enterprise, Education and Education Premium, and Google One AI Premium members. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to be available for personal accounts at the moment.

This feature saves me a lot of time and effort when managing files. I often need to sift through large amounts of files to find the information I need, and Gemini’s ability to summarize and analyze folders can make this process more efficient. I’m also curious about how the Topic Analysis feature can help me identify patterns and connections between different documents that I might not notice otherwise.
