Gemini overlay rolling out ‘Ask about this PDF’ on Android

How announced at I/O 2024 In May, the Gemini overlay for Android is widely rolling out the “Ask About This PDF” integration.

When viewing a PDF file in New Google Viewer FilesWhen you launch the Gemini overlay, a new feature “Ask about this PDF” appears. For now, this is only available in the Files app and doesn’t work in the Google Drive viewer, which, like every other app, just shows “Ask About This Screen.”

Clicking “Ask about this PDF” will begin downloading the document and you can enter text in the “Ask Gemini” field. The submit button is disabled until the process is completed.

The response will be shown as an overlay on the PDF in the background. You can then enter additional questions.

It’s exactly the same as uploading a file to the Gemini app and having a conversation there, but the process is a little smoother.

Document uploads are only available for Gemini Advanced clients and take advantage of the model’s long context window.

We are seeing this being widely adopted with version 16.0.5 Google app, which is currently in beta and should be stable soon.
