Gemini’s 2.0 Flash Experimental model arrives on Android and iOS devices

Gemini app on Android Now allows users to access 2.0 Flash experimental modelshot off the heels of its debut on the Google Apps beta channel earlier this week. This means those using Gemini on Android devices can now take advantage of Google’s latest and greatest artificial intelligence models. It’s all thanks to the 15.50 update to the Gemini app, which is powered by Google Apps. You can get updates from Play store Now. If you’re eager to give it a try, you may need to force stop and restart the Google or Gemini apps to see the model switcher at the top of the Gemini home page. The good news is that the 2.0 Flash Experimental model is available to everyone, whether you use the free version of Gemini or have purchased a premium subscription. You’ll find a model selector at the top with a subscription “upgrade” promotion.

Now, it’s important to remember that this is an experimental model. Google is still working out these issues, so don’t be surprised if you run into a hiccup or two. Some features, such as file upload, are not yet available. Think of it as a sneak peek of what’s to come.

Although still in the experimental stage, Gemini 2.0 Flash already shows a lot of promise. Google says it’s twice as fast as previous versions and performs better in key benchmarks. This means Gemini assistants will be more helpful and responsive. Google plans to make 2.0 Flash mockups available to developers in January, with more mockup sizes coming soon. At the same time, they encourage users to try out experimental models and share their feedback.

The update comes on the heels of a similar update for iPhone users, who also gained access to an experimental model of Flash 2.0. There’s more to come, as mobile users can look forward to “Deep Research” access early next year, which will bring advanced reasoning and long context capabilities. I’m also curious to see what the in-depth research feature will look like once it’s launched. This sounds like it could be a game changer for anyone looking into it seriously.
