As an online mattress reviewer, I test a lot of hybrid beds. Our mattress testing facility has provided numerous options with support coils, most of which are very similar. If I had a nickel for every time I said “neutral mixed feelings” – believe me, I’d be a very rich man.

That’s why it’s always refreshing to get a more uniquely styled hybrid bed like this one GhostBed Flex. This mattress combines support coils with various comfort elements to produce an interesting feel of comfort—and that’s before I even get started on its cooling capabilities. In this review, I’ll discuss what our team likes about Flex, what we don’t like, and who we think it’s best suited for.

GhostBed Flex first impressions

Jon Gomez/CNET

The GhostBed Flex arrived at our space with absolutely free shipping. It came in a tall cardboard box, similar to any other bed-in-a-box, and we dumped the contents, ripped off the plastic, and watched the bed inflate. Since it’s an all-foam mattress, we noticed it looked a little misshapen when it first came out of the box, but after sitting on our foundation overnight and unfolding, it looked completely normal.

In the morning, it’s time to test the bed. While testing the responsiveness, I initially noticed it had a neutral quality, but things got interesting as I got deeper into the bed. It seemed to respond more quickly than the more responsive memory foam mattresses, but I still experienced a nice sinking feeling when I jumped on. On my back, I felt adequate support and adequate cushioning in my shoulders and hips as I turned to my sides. This mattress topper also feels much cooler than the ones found on more standard hybrid mattresses.

GhostBed Flex Mattress Firmness and Feel

What does the GhostBed Flex mattress feel like?

Jon Gomez/CNET

To us, the GhostBed Flex feels like a neutral hybrid bed mixed with a hint of memory foam. You move. This is likely due to the bed’s memory foam layer being balanced by the more responsive nature of the support coils of the otherwise neutral comfort element.

All things considered, the feel of this mattress is perfect for those of us who want a snug feel in bed but don’t want too much. Dense memory foam like Tempur-Pedic can be a bit overwhelming for some sleep styles, especially Combination sleepers People who like to walk around at night. If you want a pressure-reducing mattress that moves throughout the night, a neutral bed with a bit of memory foam, like the GhostBed Flex, is a good choice.

How firm is the GhostBed Flex mattress?

Jon Gomez/CNET

This bed is about a medium size on our scale, give or take. It provides equal pressure relief and support to sleepers, making it versatile enough to fit all sleeper types. Whether you prefer sleeping on your back, side, stomach or all three in some order, this option has you covered.

Buying a bed with a neutral firmness level like this is usually a safe approach, especially if you’re not sure how firm you want your bed to be. Medium firmness is pretty much the best in terms of comfort, being both soft and firm. I personally slept on the medium sized bed and really liked the comfort it provided me. If you want a super soft option, this doesn’t have to be, but feel free to check out our Best mattress for side sleepers List some other beds that suit this preference.

GhostBed Flex Mattress Construction

Jon Gomez/CNET

The mattress is 13 inches thick and is composed of:

  1. At the base, there’s a thin layer of base foam, then the bed’s main support system, which is made up of individually wrapped coils.
  2. Then you have the responsive transition foam, which adds some bounce to the mattress and acts as a cushioning layer between the support and comfort layers of the bed.
  3. The top of the GhostBed Flex has several layers of gel memory foam for comfort. These give the bed its primary sinking, pressure-relieving feel.
  4. Beyond that – things are starting to get cold. The brand’s Ghost Ice technology layer is here, just beneath the bed’s quilted cover, which incorporates even more memory foam and cooling technology.

GhostBed Flex Mattress Performance

motion isolation

If you or your partner are particularly light sleepers, this is an important thing to consider when choosing your next mattress. Sometimes, if one person moves around too much or gets up in the middle of the night, it wakes the other person. In this case, you need a bed that dampens movement well. For a premium hybrid mattress, the GhostBed Flex absorbs a lot of cross-mattress motion. I highly doubt you’ll be pushing anyone awake in this bed anytime soon.

Edge-to-edge support

As a more premium hybrid mattress, we think the GhostBed Flex has excellent edge support. As you apply your weight to the bed’s perimeter, its support coils and various comfort foams help keep you firmly planted along those edges. If edge support is a key consideration for you or your partner, we generally recommend a hybrid mattress like this rather than an all-foam mattress.

Jon Gomez/CNET

temperature

Unlike regular hybrid mattresses, which typically sleep at a neutral temperature, we think all the cooling features in the GhostBed Flex will definitely help cool you down significantly at night. By default, we classify this as an actively cooling bed, but your bedding may affect the bed’s overall cooling capabilities. If you want to see more online beds like this, you can always check out our The Best Cooling Mattress for Hot Sleepers list.

Durability

The GhostBed Flex should be durable enough to last an average-sized person at least the next 7-10 years (and possibly longer). When it comes to the durability of online mattresses, we generally say that a hybrid bed with support coils outperforms an all-foam support base in the long run—foam degrades a bit faster over time than steel coils . For this reason, it’s easy to see why the GhostBed Flex performs so well under long-term stress.

Who is the GhostBed Flex Mattress Best for?

Jon Gomez/CNET

While this premium cooling mattress is suitable for many sleepers, it still may not be the best fit for everyone. That said, here’s who we think it’s best suited for.

Sleeping position

Combination sleepers who switch between different positions during the night may get the most out of the GhostBed Flex. Its medium-firm profile provides enough support for back and stomach sleepers while providing enough pressure relief to accommodate most side sleepers. All types of sleepers should function well on this mattress.

When it comes to more specific sleep preferences, things get a little trickier. If you want an extra-firm or extra-soft mattress, this isn’t necessarily your dream bed. If you want your mattress to have more of a memory foam feel, there are other options worth considering. You can always check out our The best memory foam mattress List some other beds that are slower to respond.

body shape

The GhostBed Flex should be supportive enough to accommodate all body types: petite, medium or larger. If you’re heavier, you may prefer sleeping on a hybrid mattress like this rather than a less supportive all-foam bed. If you’re interested in checking out other super supportive options for big guys, feel free to peruse our list Best beds for heavier people.

GhostBed Flex Mattress Pricing

size Dimensions (inches) price
pair 38×75 inches $1,795
Extra large single bed 38×80 inches $1,995
Full 54×75 inches $2,095 USD
Queen 60×80 inches $1,660
king 76×80 inches $1,995
Calkin 72×84 inches $2,015

One of my favorite things about this mattress is the price it’s currently available for—the queen size is surprisingly affordable. After discounts, you can currently get one for less than $1,000. This is a great advantage for a cooling mixed bed of this quality. As a brand, GhostBed typically offers bedding sales year-round, and the sales are even sweeter during major holidays.

Trial, shipping and warranty

Jon Gomez/CNET

GhostBed’s policy settings also go above and beyond. The Flex mattress ships completely free in the box, and once you own it, you can try it risk-free at home with a 101-night trial. If you don’t like it within the stipulated time, you can return it for free and get a full refund. On the other hand, if you decide to keep it, you get a 25-year warranty. Just make sure to use the right foundation for your bed. Otherwise, your bed’s warranty may be voided.

How does the GhostBed Flex compare to other mattresses?

GhostBed Flex vs GhostBed Luxe

The main differences between these two premium GhostBeds are construction, feel, and price. Flex has coils for support, while Ghost Bed Deluxe Room Features a dense, supportive foam base. In the long run, this allows Flex to better support larger bodies. The coils in the Flex also make the mattress more responsive, and it has less memory foam feel than the Luxe. The GhostBed Flex is also much cheaper than the Luxe, with the queen currently priced at more than $1,500 after discounts.

GhostBed Flex and Nest Sparrow

These are two popular hybrid options in the online space, and they differ in many ways. Both give people a mainly neutral feeling, but Nest sparrow Has a more obvious pillow-top feel. The Sparrow is available in a variety of firmnesses and even comes with replacement comfort pads. While the Sparrow offers more options, the GhostBed Flex offers superior cooling advantages in comparison. The larger GhostBed Flex is also more affordable, but you do get a better policy by going the Nest Bedding route.

final verdict

This is a quality hybrid bed that offers a lot of features for the average person. It’s very reasonably priced, especially considering it’s a more supportive cooling mattress with a comfortable firmness and feel. If you want a good mattress at a reasonable price, I would definitely check it out.

You might like the GhostBed Flex mattress if you:

  • You’re looking for a quality hybrid mattress
  • You want a bed with a memory foam texture
  • You want a medium-firm bed
  • You want an actively cooling mattress

You may not like the GhostBed Flex Hybrid Mattress if:

  • You are looking for an all-foam mattress
  • You want more of a memory foam feel in your bed
  • You want an extra hard or soft bed
  • Your budget is very tight

This is actually a very wholesome story. The founder of GhostBed was apparently terrified of ghosts hiding under his bed as a child. He carried the idea with him until he founded his own mattress company. Sounds like a dream – but it’s true.

Neither. Well, at least Flex isn’t. It’s medium on our firmness scale, which means it provides sleepers with a balance of support and comfort. While not too soft or firm, the firmness accommodates a variety of sleep preferences.

The short answer is, yes. All GhostBed mattresses are made and manufactured in the USA. Additionally, all materials used in its construction are CertiPUR-US certificationmeaning they are constructed in an ethical, non-toxic way.
