Google announced today The launch of AndroidXRan operating system created for extended reality (XR) headsets and smart glasses. Android XR is equivalent to Google’s visionOS, running on Apple Vision Pro earphone.

Android XR is designed for “next-generation computing,” and Google has partnered with Samsung to develop the operating system. Google is making Android XR preview available to developers today so they can start building apps and games for future Android XR devices that will compete with Meta’s Vision Pro and VR headsets.

The first headphones running Android XR will be designed by Samsung and are expected to launch in 2025. Adjust Vision Pro immersion levels by turning on or off the real-world view provided by the camera.

Android XR will include Gemini, Google’s artificial intelligence assistant, which will provide device control and insights into what the wearer is seeing. Google says Gemini will be able to help users plan, research topics and get guidance on tasks. YouTube will be available to watch on a “virtual big screen,” and Google photo Will support 3D images. Google Maps will offer an immersive view, and Chrome will support multiple virtual screens for multitasking.

Google said that mobile and tablet apps in Google Play will be compatible with Android XR “out of the box” and will create more immersive content for XR in 2025.

As for smart glasses, Android XR will provide one-click access to Google Gemini. Google plans to test prototype glasses running Android XR with a small group of users in the near future.
