TL;DR
- Google Messages is working on an in-app backup feature.
- Backup settings in Messages now look like they include information about your available Google storage.
- If you’re low on resources, the links provide quick access to cleanup tools and account update options.
One of the best tips you can take into account when it comes to using your smartphone is to remember backup your data. Whether you’re preparing to upgrade to a new device or just want to make sure a copy of your important data is somewhere safe and secure, backups have you covered. Last fall, we looked at Google’s efforts to create a new message backup functionand today we have a little information about how this can be implemented.

At this time, Messages still does not offer a native backup solution. You can choose to back up SMS and MMS messages as part of your “other device data” when using Google One to back up your phone, but the Messages app itself doesn’t let you do that directly. However, Google seems very interested in changing this situation, and when we dug into its work in progress back in November, we discovered a fairly detailed interface for entering and managing backup settings in Messages:
While Google has yet to publicly introduce this feature, we’re keeping an eye on further developments and have now discovered that Google is considering adding a storage section to the backup settings in Messages.

Back in the days when text messaging was essentially just text, the idea of the impact of backups on storage limits might have seemed a little silly; even a mountain of text takes up only a few megabytes. But with the advent of RCS supporting high-quality images and videos embedded in our messages, it’s quickly becoming easy to see that data storage can become a very real problem.
We’re still no closer to knowing when Google will finally launch this tool, but development appears to be close to being ready.
