TL;DR

  • Google Photos is reversing a change that prevented sharing screenshots, uploads, and photos from third-party apps with partners.
  • In the latest Google Photos update, we were able to offer an option that allows you to share photos from third-party apps with your partner.
  • This feature was removed back in November, but it looks like it’s coming back.

Partner sharing is a feature that allows you to Google Photos users automatically share their image library with selected partners. Back in November, Google abruptly removed the ability to share screenshots, uploads, and photos from third-party apps with partners, a feature that had been available in the Google Photos app since partner sharing first appeared in 2017. Now it looks like Google is going backwards. of course, introducing a new option that will once again allow users to share photos from third-party apps with their partners.

With the help of our Assemble Debug contributor, we were able to introduce a new partner sharing option in the latest version of the Google Photos app (v7.12). Users will soon be able to toggle the “Include content from other Android apps” option in partner sharing settings in Google Photos.

This option isn’t available yet, but when it arrives in a future Google Photos update, it will be disabled by default. This means that if you want third-party images to automatically appear on your partner’s phone, you’ll have to manually enable “Include content from other Android apps” in Google Photos settings.

The timing of wider rollout remains unclear. Google partner sharing support page still says: “Photos from other Android apps are not transferred to your partner account.” However, it’s encouraging to see that Google is working to reintroduce this feature with greater control over what users choose to share with their partners.
