Google Pixel finds traction in India’s premium smartphone market
Google Pixel is finally gaining traction in the Indian premium smartphone market as the brand managed to grow while OnePlus fell sharply.
India is one of the world’s largest smartphone markets, but the premium segment is still quite small in comparison. According to a new report from CanalisBetween Q1 and Q3 2024, around 6.5 million premium smartphones were shipped in India. This is up from 4.2 million a year earlier.
From the numbers in this report, we can see that OnePlus’ market share has dropped significantly, increasing from 21% to just 6% (Android brands) over the year, while other BBK (parent company of OnePlus) brands including Oppo and Vivo both saw noticeable growth. Samsung also saw a jump that Canalis attributes of the Galaxy S24 series. Samsung has around 30% share of the overall premium smartphone segment in India.
Google Pixel has also seen remarkable growth in India, from 1% in 2023 to 5% in 2024. This is likely due to some extent to the Pixel 8’s rear panel, which now produced (partially) in India which is part of Google’s overall push for growth in the region. 2024 also there has been significant growth for Google outside India, including 2024, including Pixel’s highest sales quarter to date.
At the same time, Apple continues to dominate the premium smartphone segment in India, with approximately 56% market share compared to 44% for all Android brands.
