What you need to know
- Google Home and Nest products are experiencing an issue that is causing their speakers and displays to become unresponsive this week.
- The problem particularly affected verbal commands, even something as simple as “What’s the weather?”
- Google says the issue should be resolved for most users now and is looking into what caused the problem.
Google said today it has resolved widespread problems with Google home page and Nest products are not responding to commands that have been bothering users for almost a week. First reported Android AuthorityProblems prevented Home and Nest’s speakers and displays from responding to even the most basic questions, such as the time or weather. The company is still investigating the cause of the issues, but has confirmed that most users should not experience stuttering at this time.
“The team is still investigating the root cause but has resolved the issue so all users should be prepared to go,” a Google spokesperson explained.
Issues that specifically affected voice commands can be traced back to at least December 30th, as evidenced by posts on the Google Support Forum (via 9to5Google). While Nest Hub displays in particular showed the correct weather and time, voice assistant queries froze when asking for the same information. The displays constantly showed the loading screen and were unable to respond to basic queries.

Some requests, such as smart home or media control, still worked. However, anything that requires the Home or Nest speaker or display to receive a response will fail. Fortunately, it looks like the problems have been resolved. Android Authority reported that the issues no longer affected its devices, and Android Central verified that Google Home Hub And Nest Hub Max both were able to respond to queries.
It’s unclear what caused the speakers and displays to become unresponsive over the past week or so. The bug may be related to how the Google Home and Nest products decide which one will respond to requests, since support positions indicate This has had a negative impact on people with multiple speakers or displays.
Posts from Google support and Reddit document understandable user frustration, but at least the issues appear to have been resolved for now.
