Google starts rolling out Gemini overlay redesign on Android

The first big update to the Gemini overlay on Android is starting to roll out to some users.

Gemini is out on Android last February. Long-pressing the power button, swiping up from the bottom corners, or saying the hotword “Hey Google” results in a rounded rectangle. A Gemini sparkle will appear in the top left corner with a greeting and a shortcut to open the full version of the application. At the bottom you’ll find a panel for keyboard, voice and camera input, and Gemini Live is in the bottom right corner.

The new design compresses everything into a text box and matches the Gemini app. simplifying the home screen in October.

Just like the full version of the app, you will see a “plus” menu on the left followed by “Ask Gemini” The voice input circle and the entire overlay are bathed in the same blue-violet glow, which is quite noticeable in this new size. The Live shortcut complements this interface.

Eat several reports today is about the people who will receive the updated Gemini overlay design. It’s not widely deployed yet, and we’re not seeing it on the devices we tested this afternoon.

This new overlay is quite compact, with many parallels to the Google search bar, although it is not tablet shaped. Overall, Gemini’s initial pre-response UI shouldn’t be too big.
